Career Tips For Postgrads

I graduated from UC Berkeley in May 2012, and let me tell you, the job market out there was tough. I had applied to jobs in the Bay Area as well as LA, my hometown. Since I wasn’t able to secure a position upon graduating, I moved back home to LA. It took me 3 full months to finally land a job in the field I was interested in. I believe it would’ve taken longer to find a job, had it not been for my undying persistence in the job hunt. I applied to countless jobs, checked listings on Indeed, Craigslist, and LinkedIn almost every other hour, consistently followed up with recruiters and hiring managers, and voraciously read every career article I could find online.

Some say college is where you find yourself, well I think you find out who you are after college. I’ve learned quite a lot about myself since graduating college. I’ve learned what I like, what I don’t like, what I’m good at, what I suck at, and what I need to work on. I’ve learned more about myself through the job hunt process and full-time job experience than I ever did in college. Going to classes and studying in the library can only teach you so much. I’d like to share some tips and advice I came across while on my own current job hunt. I believe your 20s is the most crucial decade of your life. Now is the time to find out what you’re truly passionate about and pursue it, before major bills and settling down to have a family. Now is the time to be broke, make mistakes, and explore!

I  also came across 2 very helpful TEDxTalks videos that apply to postgrads struggling to find work, or at least the type of work they’re passionate about.

The first suggests the idea of “free work,” where a new grad can volunteer to help businesses on a project-by-project basis. This allows you to build experience and gain an extensive network.

The second outlines how to build your personal brand online. These steps can be applied to anyone in any field. You don’t really exist if you’re not online.
